Tips for Making Time Pay While You're Away From Your Office

Expect to Work and Think Hard

You’re not on vacation! How much is your time worth per hour? With a little effort you can be as productive while away from the office as you are in the office…maybe more!
“Thinking is hard work. Real thinking is a rare thing, because it is hard. The real thinker becomes the master of those who merely think they think. A vast amount of mind-wandering and daydreaming is mistaken for thinking by people who do not think,” Ralph C. Smedley, Founder of Toastmasters International.

Visualize the Results You Want

What are your objectives to be accomplished by attending this meeting or convention? Not wasting your valuable time starts by being clear on what you want to accomplish.

 |
|

Prepare an Itinerary/To Do List

As you plan the sessions and meetings you will attend, also begin your To Do List for each day you’ll be gone. Use your To Do List while away just as you would when at the office. It’s an effective tool to help you remain organized and productive.
Expect delays. Bring a special project or two with you and use your delay time to your advantage.

Get Write To It

"A faint pen has more power than the keenest mind. Get in the habit of writing it down. Your mind is best used for the big picture rather than all the details. The details are important, but manage them with the pen. If you want to manage it you have to measure it first. Writing things down helps you more easily remember all that you need to accomplish," Don Wetmore, Professional Speaker. See web site below.

Merge and Purge

Avoid bits of paper. Take notes right on the handouts, on a legal pad or in a spiral notepad. Don’t use anything less than an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper unless it’s bound. Don’t tear out sheets from your legal pad until later.
During your personal productivity time, review what you’ve collected and purge all but the most important. That’s where the wastebasket comes in!
For all the rest, sign up at the Business Center for our Hands Free Service. Drop off what you want to keep and we’ll securely store it for you and send it back home so you don’t have to lug it to the airport or your hotel room.

Set Aside Personal Productivity Time

Schedule a time once or twice a day to attend to daily things that need to be done. Write these times in your Day-Timer or on your To Do List.
Leave your cell phone off and let your office know what times you will check your voice mail. Return calls at this time. Leave an effective voice message.
Stop in at the Business Center once or twice a day to check your email and pick up or send faxes.
Set aside a time each day to review your notes and update your To Do List.

4 Truths About Time

1. We all have too much to do.
2. There is never enough time to “get it all done”.
3. There is always time to get the most important things done.
4. There may not be time to do it right, but there is always time to do it over.
